In his letter published in the July 10 issue of the Cortez Journal, Torin Andrews claims, once again, to know what is best for Montezuma County. Mr. Andrews lives in Maryland or Moscow, if you believe the letter written by him published in the March 6 edition of the Journal. Presumably, he thinks that makes him smarter than those of us who actually live in Montezuma County.
I ran for, and was elected to, the board of directors of the Cedar Mesa Ranches Homeowners Association in 2005 in response to pleas from several ladies who said they were being unduly harassed by their common male neighbor. I became president of the largest homeowners association in Montezuma County in 2009. These positions are strictly voluntary.
Of the 139 property owners in our community, 85 do not live in the subdivision. It is not surprising that strong differences of opinion may exist between absentee owners, like Mr. Andrews, and those of us who actually live here in Mancos.
Members of the board of directors of our homeowners association are obligated, by law, to make decisions based solely on what is best for this community. Occasional ridicule, or worse, is a price that we willingly pay in the service of our community. As the saying goes, Its a tough job, but somebody has got to do it. Interestingly enough, that very same saying is also often applied to the job of county commissioner.
I am confident that the voters of Montezuma County are better at deciding what is best for them than a lawyer from Maryland or Moscow, as the case may be.
