Driver Safety Course will be offered by AARP
An AARP driver safe driving course will be offered from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at the Calvin Denton Room in the Empire Electric Building, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
The four-hour class is a refresher course designed to meet the needs of mature drivers. Course participants can review safe driving practices, develop strategies for adjusting to age-related changes, and learn about any new Colorado traffic laws. Completion of this course can qualify you for a discount on your automobile insurance. The course is available to all drivers, whether or not they are members of AARP. A $12 fee for AARP members and $14 fee for non-members (checks only, please - no cash) covers materials used in the course. Bring your driver's license and your AARP membership number, if you have one.

Telluride Repertory Theatre Co. to perform at Cortez Public Library
The Telluride Repertory Theatre Company (The REP) will be performing at the Cortez Public Library at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 22. The REP creates first-rate community, culturally relevant theatre from original, classical and contemporary works. The REP encourages participation of all ages in the creation and enjoyment of the theatrical experience and is a perfect fit for the Summer Reading Program's theme of "One World, Many Stories." The Cortez Public Library is located at 202 N. Park St.

Public is invited to meeting for new online high school
There will be a free information session at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the Cortez Public Library. This is an opportunity for the public to learn about Southwest Colorado e-School, an accredited online diploma-granting high school.
Online school is accessible anytime and anywhere, includes individualized instruction, and provides a diploma that is accredited and recognized by colleges and universities nationwide. Additionally, tuition is free for students ages 14-20, and all SWC e-School curriculum is aligned to Colorado state standards. The school is taught by award-winning, highly qualified Colorado teachers, and students are able to participate in athletics and other extra-curricular activities in their home school district. The e-School was founded by the San Juan BOCES in cooperation with the nine school districts in southwest Colorado.

Extension Office will offer two-day food preservation class
The two-day Going Green with Food Preservation class will cover subjects from food preservation techniques to food safety practices and more. Classes will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, at the Cortez Welcome Center, 928 E. Main, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, at Empire Electric at 801 N. Broadway. Wendy Rice, Extension Agent - Family and Consumer Science Specialist from LaPlata County will be putting on the class.
At least five must be registered by Monday, June 20 for the class to be offered. The cost of the hands-on class will be $45 for the series. The class fee of $45 covers supplies, materials and all hands-on activities. To register, contact the Montezuma County Extension Office at 565-3123.
Montezuma-Cortez School District will host panel discussion for public
The Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1 invites the public to a panel discussion at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Cortez Middle School Library. Superintendent Stacy Houser will facilitate a discussion on education and facility issues that face the district.

Library's Storytime program features 'Stories We Tell' theme
"The Stories We Tell" is the June theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.
Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for pre-school aged children and every Saturday at the Farmers Market beginning at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Farmers Market is located on the corner of S. Elm and Main streets. Older children are welcome to join for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime will follow the same theme as the preceding Thursday.
We'll celebrate "Cinderella Around the World: Fairy Tales" on Thursday, June 23, and Saturday, June 25. We'll wrap up the month with "The Cow Says ... Moo!: Animal Sounds Around the World" on Thursday, June 30, and Saturday, July 2. Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Award-winning artist will give watercolor workshop
Award-winning artist Cindy Moeykens from South Carolina will hold a three-day watercolor workshop from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, at the Dolores Public Library, 1002 Railroad Ave.
This is an opportunity to learn some basics and explore various techniques unique to watercolors. The workshop is appropriate for all levels. The cost is $100, which includes the use of paints, brushes and paper to complete two paintings. (If you have your own painting supplies, the cost is $90). A portion of the proceeds and several art books will be donated to the Dolores Public Library.

Groups promote balance program for National Falls Awareness Week
Local support groups are promoting a targeted balance program called Get Balance from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Shanti School, 620 S. Beech St. in Cortez.
The message for the National Falls Awareness Week this year is to "Watch Your Step." The consequences of a fall can be devastating, causing loss of mobility and independence after which many never fully recover. Approximately 38 percent of people with Parkinson's disease fall each year and falling is a major concern for multiple sclerosis patients.
The National MS Society Cortez Chapter, the Four Corners Parkinson's Support Group, Southwest Center for Independence, and Shanti School of Taijiquan have joined forces during National Falls Awareness Week to offer the workshop and an information exchange about falls, physical activity, and the resources available in our community to seniors and those with movement disorders.

Vacation Bible School will start at Lifeway Baptist Church
Lifeway Baptist Church will hold Summer Vacation Bible School for ages 4 to 12 years old from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24. Women's Cancer Coalition will present 'Fit & Feisty' workshop
The Women's Cancer Coalition of Montezuma and Dolores counties will present "Fit & Feisty: A Free Women's Workshop" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Calvin Denton Room of Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
Speakers will present information on nutrition, exercise, diabetes education and stress management. Activities will include Silver Sneakers, easy yoga and relaxation techniques. Christian Women's Celebrations will have craft, bake sale
The Christian Women's Celebrations group will have a Market Place Craft and Bake Sale event at noon on Saturday, June 25, at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Road in Cortez. The Singing Senoritas - Lindsay and Sarah Ower will present musical entertainment, and speaker Gyanne Cellar will present 'Liberia in West Africa, Holland, or Arriola - Anywhere is Home.' The price at the door is $14.50 per person, and includes lunch, beverages, and dessert. Tickets are complimentary for first timers and women belonging to service organizations.

Medicine Horse Center will host yard, craft sale to benefit youths
The Trinkets & Treasures Community Yard & Craft Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Medicine Horse Center's covered arena at 40700 Country Road J, Mancos.
Yard sale and craft items are welcome. 10-by-10-foot spaces are available for $15 each. Participants must provide their own tables (if needed).
You can donate your unwanted items to the nonprofit Medicine Horse Center. No computers or clothing will be accepted. Email [email protected] for delivery instructions for donated items. Proceeds from the center's yard sales and fees will go to Medicine Horse's youth programs.
SKY ART opens exhibit for three local artists
The SKY ART Studio and Gallery hosts an exhibit featuring the work of three local women artists through the month of July. Sky Art Studio & Gallery is located at 125 N. Sligo St. in Cortez.
The three local artists, Joyce Heuman, Karen Kristin, and Becky Hammon create using different media: watercolor on paper, painting on canvas, and glass beads on leather. All three are "inspired by the essence of this area and the spirituality evoked by the surrounding landscape."

Anasazi Heritage Center presents rock art photo exhibit
The photo exhibit Sacred Images: A Vision of Native American Rock Art will fill the Special Exhibit Gallery at the Anasazi Heritage Center three miles west of Dolores on Colorado Highway 184.
Curator of the exhibit, David Sucec, will speak at the museum at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26, in connection with the Four Corners Lecture Series.
The exhibit, which will be on display through Oct. 30, features Utah rock art in vintage chromogenic prints by photographers Craig Law, Tom Till and John Telford. Their work acquaints the visitor with four major styles - Barrier Canyon, Hisatsinom, Fremont, and Ute - as well as the perceptions, sensibilities, and cultures of early people who hunted and farmed the Great Basin and adjacent areas.
The Heritage Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of October.

'Mancos Mix' exhibit will feature acrylic, gourd art, other works
The exhibit "Mancos Mix," with varied artwork from Mancos artists, will be on display through June at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market, Cortez.
The work on display includes watercolor, acrylic, pastel and oil paintings, as well as jewelry, gourd art, weavings, photography, blacksmithing, woodworking, and sculpture.

Dolores River Trail displays Story Walk art installation
Visit the Dolores River Trail through Monday, July 4, to see the first local Story Walk installation of I Know the River Loves Me, by Maya Christina Gonzalez.
This local project is sponsored by San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan Public Lands. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Medicine Horse invites children
to summer enrichment camps
Medicine Horse Center will hold week-long summer enrichment camps for children ages 7 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon July 11-15 and Aug. 1-5 in Mancos.
Participants will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do horse art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. Cost per child, per week, is $100. Each week is limited to eight participants. All activities are led by certified instructors.
