Clemmer will give lecture
on origins of Denver Art Museum
University of Denver anthropology professor Richard Clemmer will present Mr. Douglas, Ms. Curtis, and Nampeyo: the Origins of the Denver Art Museum as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, 23390 County Road K west of Cortez. This event is free and open to the public.
Clemmer received his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a professor of anthropology, curator of ethnology, and assistant director in the Joint Ph.D. Program in Religion and Theological Studies at the University of Denver.

Librarys Storytime program features Stories We Tell theme
The Stories We Tell is the June theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St.
Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for pre-school aged children and every Saturday at the Farmers Market beginning at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Farmers Market is located on the corner of S. Elm and Main streets. Older children are welcome to join for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime will follow the same theme as the preceding Thursday.
Well celebrate Cinderella Around the World: Fairy Tales on Thursday, June 23, and Saturday, June 25. Well wrap up the month with The Cow Says ... Moo!: Animal Sounds Around the World on Thursday, June 30, and Saturday, July 2. Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Award-winning artist will give watercolor workshop
Award-winning artist Cindy Moeykens from South Carolina will hold a three-day watercolor workshop from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25, at the Dolores Public Library, 1002 Railroad Ave.
This is an opportunity to learn some basics and explore various techniques unique to watercolors. The workshop is appropriate for all levels. The cost is $100, which includes the use of paints, brushes and paper to complete two paintings. (If you have your own painting supplies, the cost is $90). Half of the proceeds and several art books will be donated to the Dolores Public Library.

Groups promote balance program for National Falls Awareness Week
Local support groups are promoting a targeted balance program called Get Balance from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Shanti School, 620 S. Beech St. in Cortez.
The message for the National Falls Awareness Week this year is to Watch Your Step. The consequences of a fall can be devastating, causing loss of mobility and independence after which many never fully recover. Approximately 38 percent of people with Parkinsons disease fall each year and falling is a major concern for multiple sclerosis patients.
The National MS Society Cortez Chapter, the Four Corners Parkinsons Support Group, Southwest Center for Independence, and Shanti School of Taijiquan have joined forces during National Falls Awareness Week to offer the workshop and an information exchange about falls, physical activity, and the resources available in our community to seniors and those with movement disorders.

Vacation Bible School in progress at Lifeway Baptist Church
Lifeway Baptist Church will hold Summer Vacation Bible School for ages 4 to 12 years old from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, June 20, through Friday, June 24. There will be Bible studies, crafts, games and snacks. Also on Friday, at 6:30 p.m. there will be a closing program, with food and fun to follow. Lewis Grange Hall will hold meeting for public, members
All Grangers and anyone interested in reviving the Lewis Grange are invited to attend a meeting with Colorado State Master John Hagen. Hagen will meet with the Lewis Grange at 1 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Lewis Grange Hall, 20619 County Road W, in Lewis. All of the Lewis community, and all concerned about the Lewis Grange Hall, built in 1947, are asked to show-up. Perhaps the Grange can be brought back to life and the old building saved.

Mancos Rustlers 4-H Club will hold yard sale fundraiser
The Manco Rustlers 4-H Club will hold a yard sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in Boyle Park in Mancos. The money raised will fund community services, supplies and miscellaneous items the club needs throughout the year. A few things the club will have for sale are a pedaling machine, a cut-out lamp, childrens clothing, and some young womens shoes. These are just a small example of the varied items that will be available. The club also will sell lemonade, coffee and baked goods to get you going for the day.

Womens Cancer Coalition will present Fit & Feisty workshop
The Womens Cancer Coalition of Montezuma and Dolores counties will present Fit & Feisty: A Free Womens Workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Calvin Denton Room of Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
Speakers will present information on nutrition, exercise, diabetes education and stress management. Activities will include Silver Sneakers, easy yoga and relaxation techniques. Christian Womens Celebrations will have craft, bake sale
The Christian Womens Celebrations group will have a Market Place Craft and Bake Sale event at noon on Saturday, June 25, at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Road in Cortez. The Singing Senoritas Lindsay and Sarah Ower will present musical entertainment, and speaker Gyanne Cellar will present Liberia in West Africa, Holland, or Arriola Anywhere is Home. The price at the door is $14.50 per person, and includes lunch, beverages, and dessert. Tickets are complimentary for first timers and women belonging to service organizations.

Medicine Horse Center will host yard, craft sale to benefit youths
The Trinkets & Treasures Community Yard & Craft Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the Medicine Horse Centers covered arena at 40700 Country Road J, Mancos.
Yard sale and craft items are welcome. 10-by-10-foot spaces are available for $15 each. Participants must provide their own tables (if needed).
You can donate your unwanted items to the nonprofit Medicine Horse Center. No computers or clothing will be accepted. Email [email protected] for delivery instructions for donated items. Proceeds from the centers yard sales and fees will go to Medicine Horses youth programs.
Forest service will hold public hearings on Boggy-Glade plan
The U.S. Forest Service will conduct hearings for public comment on the Boggy-Glade Travel Management Plan from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at Montezuma-Cortez High School, 206 W. Seventh St.; and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Dove Creek High School, 525 N. Main St.

SKY ART opens exhibit for three local artists
The SKY ART Studio and Gallery hosts an exhibit featuring the work of three local women artists through the month of July. Sky Art Studio & Gallery is located at 125 N. Sligo St. in Cortez.
The three local artists, Joyce Heuman, Karen Kristin, and Becky Hammon create using different media: watercolor on paper, painting on canvas, and glass beads on leather. All three are inspired by the essence of this area and the spirituality evoked by the surrounding landscape.

Anasazi Heritage Center presents rock art photo exhibit
The photo exhibit Sacred Images: A Vision of Native American Rock Art will fill the Special Exhibit Gallery at the Anasazi Heritage Center three miles west of Dolores on Colorado Highway 184.
Curator of the exhibit, David Sucec, will speak at the museum at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26, in connection with the Four Corners Lecture Series.
The exhibit, which will be on display through Oct. 30, features Utah rock art in vintage chromogenic prints by photographers Craig Law, Tom Till and John Telford. Their work acquaints the visitor with four major styles Barrier Canyon, Hisatsinom, Fremont, and Ute as well as the perceptions, sensibilities, and cultures of early people who hunted and farmed the Great Basin and adjacent areas.
The Heritage Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through the end of October.

County will hold public workshops for Wildfire Protection Plan
Montezuma County is undertaking an update of the countywide Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Five public workshops will be held throughout the county, beginning with the first from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at Mancos Fire Department, located at 105 Bauer Ave. Subsequent workshops scheduled are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the following dates and locations:

Wednesday, July 20, Cortez Fire Station, 23 N. Washington St.
Wednesday, Aug. 10, Pleasant View Fire Station, U.S. Highway 491 in Yellow Jacket.

These workshops will identify the values that people should strive to protect though the update of the Montezuma County Wildfire Protection Plan, review the high-risk area maps for accuracy, and help residents become more prepared for wildfires. Mancos Mix exhibit will feature acrylic, gourd art, other works
The exhibit Mancos Mix, with varied artwork from Mancos artists, will be on display through June at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market, Cortez.
The work on display includes watercolor, acrylic, pastel and oil paintings, as well as jewelry, gourd art, weavings, photography, blacksmithing, woodworking, and sculpture.

Dolores River Trail displays Story Walk art installation
Visit the Dolores River Trail through Monday, July 4, to see the first local Story Walk installation of I Know the River Loves Me, by Maya Christina Gonzalez.
This local project is sponsored by San Juan Mountains Association and San Juan Public Lands. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

Medicine Horse invites children
to summer enrichment camps
Medicine Horse Center will hold week-long summer enrichment camps for children ages 7 to 12 from 9 a.m. to noon July 11-15 and Aug. 1-5 in Mancos.
Participants will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do horse art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. Cost per child, per week, is $100. Each week is limited to eight participants. All activities are led by certified instructors.
