What are the biggest challenges you see facing Mancos, and how do you think the town board can play a role in addressing them?
Two citizens approached me with their concerns about air-quality issues with the Western Excelsior Corp., west of town. They spoke of the accumulations of sawdust on cars parked briefly outside their homes, which are located blocks from the plant. I plan to speak with members of the board and the mayoral candidates to learn the history of this situation, what has been done, and what still needs to be done.
How can the town government play a role in economic development, and what kind of development would you like to see?
In participating in town board meetings, problems with rezoning of property have become evident. I would propose establishing a “how to” list for people seeking rezoning that itemizes in detail the action required, specific timelines, and who is responsible for different steps. If established, the board would be responsible for seeing that established policies and procedures are maintained. This should encourage new businesses and demonstrate that the town is actively seeking them.
What is your position on livestock within city limits?
I reviewed a recent story in The Durango Herald and contacted the Dolores Town Hall staff about how they handle this issue and spoke with three citizens of Mancos about it. I do not think livestock (cows, horses, pigs, goats, llamas, mules, etc.) should be permitted within the town limits because of the close proximity of houses here, but chickens and rabbits are OK, so long as no one complains.
What is the best thing about Mancos and the worst thing about Mancos?
The citizens are the best part of Mancos. I’ve found them to be intelligent, hard-working individuals who offer differing opinions and experiences. The worst concerns existing rules/regulations that citizens do not perceive are enforced fairly or consistently (example: business signage).
Which construction projects along U.S. Highway 160 should be the highest priority?
Construction of the pedestrian bridge over Hwy. 160 since it will provide a safe crossing for our children.
