When my son was a pre-schooler, we put limits on TV time. As a budding technoid, he figured out the on switch in short order. But he knew he had to get permission first.
One day I walked in on him watching without permission. He reacted with alarm, covered his eyes with his hands and said, “Don’t see me!”
This reaction bears striking similarities with President Trump’s White House (refusal to allow witnesses, to share documents linked to charges) and Republican senators who fear continued scrutiny from voters with basic cognitive powers who watch the display of their retreat into feigned ignorance in order to retain their power and perks of office.
For that reason, let’s remember the behavior of Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner. He could have called for witnesses and documents in the Senate trial. He didn’t, enabling the Republican “nothing to see here” strategy.
Closer to home, Gardner hasn’t held a town hall in over two years. Earlier, in 2016-17, he hid out for over a year with no town halls. That’s how much Gardner respects his constituents.
