On Thursday, Oct. 18 the 2013 Leadership Montezuma Class learned more about our local government and its inner workings. Wed like to thank all our guest presenters for their valuable contribution and time. Jim Skvorc gave a dynamite presentation on Civics 101, Shane Hale, Cortez City Manager and Ryan Mahoney, Dolores Town Manager, enlightened the class on how local governments are structured and how they collaborate with other governments regionally. Carol Tullis, County Clerk and Recorder educated the group on how elections are run, Judy Schuenemeyer, wearer of many hats, informed us about the role of League of Women Voters and spoke about the BEST grant and its potential effects. MB McAfee and Rocky Moss explained the Heart and Soul grant, and to end the day Karen Sheek and Tom Bulter discussed their roles as Cortez City Councilors and helped the class to hold a mock city council meeting. It was a lively and informative day. Thanks also to Empire Electric and the Cortez City Hall for donating their meeting space for this event and to Karlas Kitchen and Bakery in Dolores and The Farm in Cortez for providing excellent food for the group.
