The Four Corners Community Band is looking for new members from the Cortez and Durango areas.
The only requirements are experience with a band instrument – woodwind, brass, or percussion - at a high school level.
Rehearsals resume from 7-9 p.m. every Monday night beginning Jan. 23 at the First Baptist Church on Market Street in Cortez.
The idea behind the band was to start a concert band that would support community events and provide entertainment throughout the Four Corners area. The band plays a wide range of styles, from light classical to jazz, pop to Broadway, movie music to rock ’n’ roll and marches.
The band consists of people in their 20s to a 92-year-old fiddle player who covers the oboe parts. The band has performed throughout the area, including Mancos, Shiprock, Cortez, Newcomb, Dolores and Rico, at schools, Mesa Verde National Park, nursing homes and local parks and parades.
“Many wonderful friendships have been formed through these various functions,” said organizer Mark Allen. “You are never too old to play music.”
Band members also hold occasional social events to enjoy one another’s company.
