A number of letters in opposition to 3B have stated that its not the building but what happens in that building that is important. Good programs and teachers are paramount, but I can state unequivocally that the building is also a critical factor in a quality education. I taught at Cortez Middle School over 30 years. When I took the librarian position in 1990, the library was on the second floor. A wall of windows was its only attraction. It was small, shelving cramped with an outdated collection, and the acoustics made teaching a challenge.
In 1995, the library moved into a brand new facility Although I had worked hard in the previous space to promote the program, now the library became a hub in the school. We had space for collaborative teaching, room for several groups of students to come and research. Technology was available to teach students how to access and analyze information beyond the walls of the classroom. The new facility allowed me to do more with students and staff and to be a more effective teacher. It was a space that enhanced rather than hampered the educational process.
Can I guarantee that a new building will result in every student performing at or above grade level? No, but not because the building isnt critical to student performance. Students must come with a willingness to be engaged and to work. Parents must promote the value of education and demand their child perform to the best of their ability. Getting an education is not a spectator activity; it requires effort by students, parents, teachers and the community. A new building will help educators be the best they can be, demonstrate to children that the community values education, and provide the resources for students to prepare to participate successfully in the wider world. Where would you want open-heart surgery on a family member performed in an outdated operating room constructed in 1967 or a state-of-the art surgical suite? Lets provide no less for our students and expect great things! Vote yes on 3B.
