Over the last two months, the Cortez 21st Century High School Committee has worked to share information about the $22.7 million BEST grant award to the Re-1 school district. This money comes from leased land revenues (oil and gas, grazing) and lottery spillover funds, not state taxes. In order to use it though, we must pass 3B, providing our 48 percent match, and build the 21st Century high school we need for half the cost.
We would like to thank the more than 45 groups who have invited us to share our informational presentation. They include seniors, businesses, parents, retired teachers, hospital staff, service clubs, Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Council, League of Women Voters, Farm Bureau, Montezuma Valley Irrigation and Water Conservation Boards and many more.
We have had booths at the Farmers Market, tables at City Market and been present at events such as Summerfest, Heart and Soul, MCHS Sports Open House and the Homecoming parade.
Informational brochures, a website, www.MCHSbond.com, mailers and a Facebook page all cover in detail current issues and concerns with the present facility, costs, an explanation of the BEST grant program, frequently asked questions and answers and contact information.
In addition, the high school has been open for tours every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 pm since Sept. 4 in order for every interested person to have the opportunity to look under the hood and ask questions.
As we have always said, teachers, students and parents are the heart and soul of our educational system. The Oct. 13 letter from Superintendent Alex Carter described efforts being made by the district to meet their needs and help our district excel.
A vital component is safe and secure facilities capable of meeting the demands of 21st century curriculum. Our high school is a crucial educational tool and the opportunity is here to meet that need for years to come.
If you or your group still need more information, we would be happy to schedule a presentation or speak with you individually.
