I found the editorial “Import tariffs” (Journal, April 9) to be disingenuous.
The Journal tells us they are concerned about the loss of jobs and negative effects the loss of quality and news coverage would have to small communities like ours. The Journal says this is what higher newsprint costs would cause. However, it was The Journal itself that decided to go from three papers per week to two. They told us the post office was ending Saturday delivery, and because of that, and other considerations, it made good sense for them to go from three to two papers per week.
They also moved the job of printing the paper from Cortez to Farmington, a loss of jobs for Cortez and Colorado. I believe The Journal is only concerned about two things: walking the fine line between being as liberal as possible while minimizing loss of subscribers, and maximizing profits, which is what I believe to be the reason they went from three papers per week to two.
I also believe it’s fine that The Journal ascribe to these two goals. However, I wish they’d please stop trying to spin it otherwise.
