The Montezuma-Cortez High School tennis team wrapped up its season with a fourth place at the regional tournament in Grand Junction.
M-CHS junior Logan Dean turned in an impressive performance as the Panthers No. 2 singles player. He won three of his five matches over the two-day tournament, helping the panthers secure the fourth-place team finish.
Dean scored victories over opponents from Montrose, Cedaredge and Durango. The hard-serving junior ad lost close matches to opponents from Aspen and Steamboat Springs.
Aspen won the regional title narrowly outscoring Steamboat, which had won the championship the last 14 straight years.
Dean was the highest placing M-CHS player, earning a third-place ribbon. He said he was happy and disappointed with his play at regionals and throughout the season.
Overall, I was pleased with my season, Dean said. I was a little disappointed with my match against Aspen, but other than that I really enjoyed the season of play.
Other M-CHS players participating at Regionals included Graham Cathey at No. 1 singles and Ford Wegner at No. 3 singles. Both players lost to Hotchkiss opponents in the first round of play, and all four M-CHS doubles teams also had first-round losses.
M-CHS head coach Dan Wood summed up the season with following statement: I was very disappointed with the Regional losses but every one of the players worked hard and never gave up. We just ran into some bad luck and great levels of play from the other schools. I really look forward with enthusiasm to next year and I believe the players do as well.
