In your recent article on charging stations for electric cars (Journal, March 2), Laurie Dickson of 4CORE must have been misunderstood or misquoted.
I lead the Durango Electric Vehicle Enthusiasts (DEVE), a group for electric vehicle (EV) owners in the Four Corners. Laurie and 4CORE have been involved with us since our beginnings. She knows most EV owners in Southwest Colorado do not use them as second vehicles. The 40-plus members of DEVE use EVs as our primary commuting car.
Anyone with a 40-mile or less daily commute can fuel these vehicles at home overnight using a regular household wall socket. A 100-mile commute recharges in four hours with a Level 2 charger at home or at work.
I encourage Cortez and any business in Montezuma County to consider installing an EV charging station. My Nissan Leaf has about 130 miles of range. I can get to Cortez and back on one charge, but not too far past it. I would like to be able to go to Canyons of the Ancients or Dolores, knowing I could stop in town on the way back and get enough charge to get home. Level 2 charging takes long enough, I’d enjoy getting a meal, shopping or staying overnight while the car “filled up.”
EV owners want charging stations in places they want to go. EVs are cheaper to fuel, more efficient and a lot more fun to drive than petrol cars. Once you drive one, you won’t want to go back.
