Responding to the letter from Sandy Lauzon, et al., (Journal, Jan. 30) about the Dolores playground, many people are going by “what they have heard” rather than verifiable facts. The letter appeared to place blame on the original builders.
The inspection report stated: “The posts do not show significant rot at or below grade; the deterioration of the wood above grade is significant.” The damage is not from the riverbed. The damage was above ground where it should have been sealed and maintained. Using a sealant other than that recommended by the designers cost us a playground, a very expensive substitution.
We never agreed to be sole maintenance providers. Funds were transferred, and the town agreed to budget and maintain it for 20 years when the GOCO grant was accepted.
Carcinogens? Even the current Material Safety Data Sheet clearly states: “Carcinogenicity ID: CSI-068 ACQ Preserve pressure treated wood and its components are not listed as carcinogens by ACGIH, NIOSH, or IARC.” This information is available for anyone willing to listen to anyone other than the town attorney.
I am tired of fingers being pointed at the original construction. That is not where the responsibility lies. Our community has lost a special asset. I feel the loss very deeply, still. As far as respect? It goes two ways. The money and staffing that was used to fence off, close, bulldoze, waste and haul off the playground could have been better spent on maintenance and repairs. At least we would still have a playground.
