I support the bond issue to build a new Montezuma-Cortez High School because I have three grandchildren and I want them to have an education that will prepare them to live and work in this 21st century. Some people have said that learning can occur anywhere and that is true, but it will not be the kind of learning the kids in our community need to be successful in the digital age.
The people who came before us valued education because they knew it was the key to success, no matter what career path someone might follow. The entire community, not just those who had children, worked to build and maintain schools and pay teachers. In the early days of this county they not only built schools, they also had to provide housing for the teachers in outlying areas. Evidence of their dedication to education still exists in places in this county like the old Lebanon School and Battle Rock, where you can see some of the oldest school buildings and the teacheries built for the teachers to live in. From 1948 to 1967, residents took on the responsibility of building nine schools, all of which still are used today. This has never been a wealthy county but the people who lived here made sacrifices so the children would have an education suitable for the time. Can we do less?
No matter where we grew up, others paid for our education. It wasnt just our parents, grandparents or neighbors. It was everyone in the community. Its our turn now and we can provide a new high school for half price to us because of the mostly Front Range money provided by the BEST grant. Lets do it!
