Crow Canyon Archaeological Center recently sent two teachers from Mancos School District on a learning expedition, giving them classroom training and some on-site, hands-on experience. Cathy Epps and Fred Schroeder, who teach third- and fourth-grade students, were involved in a three-week learning institute for educators, called Bridging Cultures: Diversity and Unity in the Publo World.

A one-car rollover accident nine miles west of Ridgway on Highway 62 resulted in the death of a black bear and the transport of two adults to the hospital, in the pre-dawn hours of Labor Day. According to Ouray County Sheriff Dominie Junior Mattivi, the Ouray County Emergency Medical Services received a call between 3:30 and 3:40 a.m. The bear was alive when crews arrived but was seriously injure dand had to be put down. The bear was estimated to be between 300 and 350 pounds.

Ouray County Sheriffs Department received an anonymous tip on Aug. 24 giving the location of an illegal marijuana grow operation. An area was investigated an a 4-foot by 8-foot space with shrubs and branches piled around it for a visual screen was found with marijuana plants found growing inside.
The Sheriff Department confiscated 33 marijuana plants, estimated to be worth between $20,000 and $30,000, no charges were filed.

On Aug. 3, biologists found and euthanized a mule deer buck in the Manti-La Sal National forest southwest of Monticello, the deer was walking in circles when the biologist found it and it had a swollen tongue and was salivating excessively. The deer tested positive for epizootic hemorrhagic disease and are asking anyone that comes across a sick deer to report it immediately.
