Dear Fellow Cortezians,
My family moved to Cortez in 2001 and since then we have seen many changes in our community over the past 11 years that have enhanced and improved our way of life, and we would like to see that continue. We are at a critical time in our communitys history with the opportunity before us to build a new high school.
A new high school is a necessity that is far overdue. Many of the deficiencies in our current facility have to be fixed within the next 1-5 years regardless, and at a much higher expense than building a new one because we have the advantage of the BEST grant to help us with half of the costs.
The fact is: we need enough space for classroom instruction, school functions such as assemblies, graduation ceremonies, performances, sports, and a cafeteria area that can seat all the students. Our students need a facility that can prepare them for the technological world we now live in.
Our community needs an adequate place to have community functions such as concerts and dance recitals. We need a facility that is healthy, safe, and secure. By not building the new high school we penalize our kids and limit our community.
The advantages far outweigh the alternatives, and will help us as a rural community both economically and educationally. Building the new high school would be a benefit to the entire Four-Corners area for years to come, and would also attract quality businesses and people to Cortez.
It would be a tangible symbol that we as a community value our childrens education, and would surely also improve morale and help with our student and teacher retention, and hopefully the graduation rate.
This is a decision which can make this community a better place to live in, to grow up in, and want to come back to. I strongly urge you to do what is best for the future of Cortez, and vote yes on 3B.
