Regarding the “Public Comments” editorial in the Herald (12/16):
While I strongly agree with your view that brute-strength partisanship is no way to govern our nation, I can’t help but wonder where your collective editorial voice was when the previous administration shepherded the widely unpopular Affordable Care Act through Congress on a narrow party line vote, resulting in nationwide historic losses for the Democratic party.
Where was your principled stand back when extralegal executive actions and all-but-in-name treaties were implemented by the previous administration solely with the intent to bypass the legislative branch?
Sadly, I don’t see any changes occurring when the current Republican majorities are eventually swept from power. Hyper-partisan governance may be the new normal, and I fear that until our government returns to the spirit of compromise and bipartisanship as envisioned by the framers of the Constitution, we are in great peril of losing our republic.
