As a supporter of alternative, renewable energy, I’m concerned about Trump’s announcement to impose a tariff on solar panel imports.
As reported by the Solar Energy Industries Association, the proposed tariff and price floors would at least double the price of panels in the U.S.!
Though it may act as incentive for locally produced panels, most of our producers are out of business, and restructuring would take time. Companies involved in ancillary products such as wiring, batteries, electrical equipment and service oppose the tariff, as imported panels are our solar lifeblood.
Customers of Empire Electric Association have asked our co-op to voice a protest against the tariff on behalf of its members in Colorado and Utah; by contacting Senators Gardner and Bennett, and Rep. Tipton, and contacting the Utah congressional delegation as well.
EEA has chosen to pursue renewable energy because it makes economic sense; tariffs would force EEA to abandon energy diversification while leaving us dependent on more costly alternatives.
I hope EEA will not be silent and miss an opportunity to move forward toward a more secure, clean and diverse energy future.
