In light of the school shooting in Aztec, New Mexico, Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 District released a statement about school security.
According to New Mexico State Police, three people are dead, including the shooter.
About 11 a.m. Thursday, Superintendent Lori Haukeness released a statement about heightened security measures in the district in light of the shootings.
“We have no reason to believe that there is any threat to students in our district at this time. However, we have taken precautionary measures. Every school has been notified, and staff are operating under heightened awareness,” Haukeness said. “Protocols in place throughout the district include security at all school entrances and exits, and safety plans that can be enacted very quickly.”
According to the release, the district received notification of the shooting and wished to assure the public that security will heighten in light of the events.
County, city and tribal law-enforcement agencies have increased their presence at RE-1 campuses and will be present at each school during student release at the end of the school day, according to the news release.
Haukeness also expressed condolences for the Aztec School District.
“The district has a comprehensive safety plan and is very diligent in keeping our students safe,” Haukeness said. “Our thoughts are prayers go out to our neighboring district.”
