July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is Craving Sleep
Craving Sleep is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. Counting Sheep will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. Hush Little Baby will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

Dance, Dive-In Movie for kids at outdoor pool
The City of Cortez and the Cortez Police Department invites middle school and elementary students to the free Dive-In Movie on Thursday, July 19 at the Cortez outdoor swimming pool. First, there will be music at the pool from 6 to 8 p.m. where you can dance or just hang out with your friends; next, the Dive-In Movie will start at 8:30 and go to 10 p.m. Watch a movie on a huge screen from the cool comfort of the pool bring floaties, air mattresses, pool chairs, inner tubes, or whatever floats. Since it gets cooler at night, attendees are urged to bring an extra towel or some clothes. This is a DARE-sponsored event.
Democratic Party to hold Get Together Potluck Fundraiser
The Montezuma County Democratic Party will have a Get Together Potluck Fundraiser on Thursday, July 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Cliffrose Nursery, 27885 Hwy. 160, Cortez. A minimum $10 donation is suggested. All interested persons are welcome to attend and questions can be addressed to Ric at 565-8994.
Anger Management classes
CARS/TRC will offer a 12-week Anger Management class starting on Thursday, July 19. Classes are two hours per week. Learn the roots of your anger, learn skills to manage your feelings, learn how to prevent outbursts and improve your relationships. CARS/TRC is at 35 N. Ash St. in Cortez. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, July 19, a basic Word class will be taught, and on Friday, July 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. A Night Out fundraiser for Bridge Emergency Shelter
A Night Out, Friday, July 20, is the Bridge Emergency Shelters summer fundraising event. This is the day and/or night to eat out for the shelter! There are 35 restaurants in Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos who are participating in our event this year by donating a percentage of their sales that day to the Bridge. Free t-shirts are available for 100 folks who eat out! Go as a group of friends, co-workers, or family. Eat out for the shelter on July 20! Fierce Grace will screen at Conscious Movie Night
The Center of Light presents Fierce Grace at Conscious Movie Night on Friday, July 20 at 7 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 (in Dolores turn left on 11th at the Riverside Gas Station, go 1.8 miles. Look for the large sign with the dove, on the left). Fierce Grace documents Ram Dass remaking his life since suffering from a stroke. While the illness might have broken others, it provided Dass with a new passion: using an unexpected, uninvited challenge as a tool for spiritual transformation, and using what he learns to help others face issues of aging, death and dying. This event is free, and all are welcome. Donations are accepted and will support the Seva Foundation. Seva is a sanskrit word meaning service to others. On Saturday, July 21, The Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host a benefit for our friend Dan Earls, who was injured in a construction accident. For Pets Sake Humane Society Summer Wine Festival
For Pets Sake will hold its fifth annual Summer Wine Festival from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, at Cliffrose High Desert Gardens just east of Cortez on Highway 160. The evening will include wines and a few choice beers provided by Smittys Liquors, yummy appetizers, solo piano by Lee Bartley, and a Silent Auction featuring items and gift certificates from your favorite businesses, restaurants, artists, and vacation destinations. Chimney Choir plays the Dolores River Brewery
The band Chimney Choir has recently returned from a European tour and will be playing a handful of Colorado mountain towns this summer. See them perform at Dolores River Brewery, 100 N. 4th St., on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. Chimney Choir skillfully interweaves genres resulting in a folk meets world music sound, steeped in psychedelia. All multi-instrumentalists, writers and singers, Kevin Larkin, David Rynhart and Kris Drickey change instruments (sometimes within a song) and sing in three-part harmony while balancing field recordings and computer synths with traditional acoustic instrumentation. The Cortez Hot Air Balloon Rendezvous will take place at 6:30 a.m. on Friday through Sunday, Aug. 3-5, at Parque de Vida. Participating hot air balloons will be in Cortez from New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. This event is known as small-town flying at its best! This is a family event, so plan to bring along your kids and become crew for a hot air balloon it is really a lot of fun. Noted Buddhist teacher, author to speak
Noted Buddhist teacher and international best-selling author Lama Surya Das will speak in Durango on Saturday, August 4 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Summer Enrichment Programs at Medicine Horse
Medicine Horse Equine Therapy Center are holding their final Summer Enrichment Program of this season. Kids ages 7 through 12 will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses.
