The Supermoon

The brightest light in Saturday’s Parade of Lights was the full moon, which was unusually large and bright. It was the night before the first and only “supermoon” of 2017. According to Space.com, “supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon’s perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth.” This causes the moon to appear up to 30 percent brighter than normal, according to the site. This year’s supermoon was at its most full when it rose after 5 p.m. on Sunday.
The December moon is called the Full Cold Moon or the Long Nights Moon by several Native American tribes, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.
