It may be hot outside, but the cool water of the Cortez Municipal Outdoor Pool was boiling with competitive swimmers last weekend.
The home town Cortez Leopard Sharks looked every bit accustomed to the outdoor pool, swimming past the competition at the Cortez Invitational Meet.
A total of 157 youth swimmers from across Colorado and New Mexico swam hundreds of laps at the outdoor pool. But the Leopard Sharks were too fast, winning the Cortez Invite, which is sanctioned by Western Slope League Swimming and USA Swimming.
Cortez tallied 1,804 points, besting second-place rival Durango Swim Club (1,339). The Four Corners Aquatic Team of Towaoc placed ninth out of 11 teams with 89 points, respectively.
