Two people were seriously injured Friday afternoon in a rear-end collision at U.S. Highway 491 and County Road P, according to authorities.
A northbound pickup truck containing two adults was turning left onto County Road P about 2:35 p.m. when it was rear-ended by another pickup, according to Cpl. James Proctor, of the Colorado State Patrol. The pickup was spun around in the collision and ended up in a ditch. Debris from the pickup was strewn along the highway.
The two adults were transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, Proctor said.
Southwest Memorial Hospital and Lewis-Arriola Fire Department personnel were called to the scene, along with Montezuma County Sheriff’s deputies and Colorado State Patrol troopers.
Lewis-Arriola Fire Chief George Deavers earlier reported that one pickup rear-ended the other as it was slowed to turn onto Road P. The investigation, however, will continue.
Deavers said the two adults in the rear-ended pickup complained of neck and back pain. He was uncertain about how seriously they had been injured, but said their truck appeared to have been totaled. The other pickup had front-end damage, but its driver was not taken to a hospital, he said.
Proctor said it was likely that the driver of the truck that hit the pickup would be cited with careless driving causing injury.
