A community meeting was held in Pleasant View Wednesday to discuss the dangerous intersection of Road BB and U.S. 491.
There have been many accidents there because of limited visibility (due to a hill) for northbound motorists turning left onto BB. When they cross the oncoming lane, crashes have occurred with southbound traffic on the highway.
At the meeting, CDOT said one solution is to prohibit left turns onto Road BB from 491. Under that scenario, the Road BB intersection would be right-in, right out only, and northbound drivers would have to take a left at Road CC instead.
Residents asked whether a left-hand turn lane could be put in to access Road BB. CDOT said the sight-distance did not meet regulations. If the hill was reduced by nine feet, the sight distance requirement would be met, but the adjustment would be cost prohibitive.
Another idea is to slow southbound traffic down on the highway. Currently the speed limit there is 65 MPH.
No final decision has been made on the matter. It will be decided by the time that section of Highway 491 is repaved in 2017.
