Granny Smiths are late bloomers in Cortez

Granny Smith flowers in October on 4-in-1 tree in Cortez
The Brunk family’s 1-year-old apple tree, from Four Season Greenery and Nursery, bloomed Oct. 5. “I was watering it yesterday, and I looked up and saw blossoms,” Gerry Brunk said. The tree is a 4-in-1 apple tree, containing Granny Smith, and Yellow, Red and Double Red Delicious apples. The Granny Smiths blossomed.
The spliced tree, purchased at Four Seasons Greenery and Nursery bloomed for the second time in 2017 – once in the spring and again on Oct. 5.
“It shouldn’t be blooming right now, Mark Brunk said. “I was thinking about putting a canopy over it and some heat and seeing if we can get some apples.”
