Playing at home against Kirtland Central on Sept. 8, the Montezuma-Cortez High School team showed glimpses of potential during a 37-13 loss.
Among the Panthers’ most successful performers was junior quarterback Ike Dennison, who completed 14 of 19 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Cole Herrmann also enjoyed a solid day for the Panthers as the junior receiver caught five passes for 106 yards and one score.
The M-CHS running game was led by Jacob Schuster, who rushed five times for 52 yards. The 170-pound sophomore also rushed for a score.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers were led by senior Sonny Boren, who recorded 16 total tackles. Tyler Wilson made 11 tackles for the Panthers, and Matthew Broughton had 10. Ethan Root and Vallentino Rodriguez each recovered fumbles for the Panthers.
Now 0-2 on the season, M-CHS will line up against Ignacio on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. The game will mark the Panthers’ first road contest of the season.
