Wednesday, Aug. 30
2:07 p.m.: Deputies responded to a request for a welfare check on an animal in the 14000 block of County Road 21. A man and woman said they had found a cat on their property that appeared to be sick, and they couldn’t find its owner. The cat appeared to be having seizures and was unable to stand up. The responding deputy contacted the Cortez Animal Hospital and the Montezuma County Health Department, but both agencies reportedly refused to send anyone to the location. The deputy killed the cat with a single shot from his firearm and removed it from the property.
3:43 p.m.: A woman was arrested at Dawson Lake gas station, 18749 U.S. Highway 491, on two felony warrants.
11:14 p.m.: A man was arrested outside Lonnie’s Glass, 448 W. Main St., Cortez, on a municipal warrant after deputies responded to a report he was sleeping on the grass near the store. He was cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital before being taken to jail, due to severe intoxication.
Thursday, Aug. 31
11:47 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report from a woman in the 25000 block of County Road P, who said she had found a bag of marijuana on her property. It was destroyed.
3 p.m.: A woman was served with two warrants at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St.
8:34 p.m.: Deputies attempted to respond to a complaint of reckless driving and trespassing at Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160, but were unable to find the female suspect.
9:42 p.m.: A man was issued a summons in the 24000 block of County Road G.2 on suspicion of driving under restraint due to an alcohol-related offense after his vehicle was pulled over for failing to display headlights when required.
Friday, Sept. 1
8:22 a.m.: Deputies assisted Cortez police in responding to a report of an assault in the 500 block of East Montezuma Avenue. A man claimed three people had assaulted him, resulting in an injury to his face. Deputies provided backup for Cortez detectives as they investigated the scene.
10:17 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a protection order violation in the 27000 block of Colorado Highway 184. A woman claimed she had a protection order against her neighbor that required him to abstain from marijuana, among other things. She claimed he had left a piece of paper on her driveway with a copy of a state Senate bill that allows medical marijuana patients to use the substance while on bond, and that he had possibly urinated on it. Responding deputies were unable to find any evidence tying the neighbor to the scene.
5:44 p.m.: A man and a woman were arrested in the 27000 block of County Road P on suspicion of second-degree burglary and possession of a controlled substance after a man claimed he had caught them hiding in his apartment bathroom. They reportedly stole a Viagra prescription, a pack of gum and a hat, but returned the items after the man confronted them. A pill bottle containing meth was found in the man’s pocket, and two syringes containing meth residue were found in a nearby apartment, which the two suspects reportedly said they had also entered without permission. The man who reported the incident was arrested on a San Miguel County warrant for failure to appear.
9:48 p.m.: A man was issued a summons in the 6400 block of County Road 21 on suspicion of first-degree trespassing and criminal mischief. A man claimed the door knob on the main entrance to the residence had been drilled into and many of his belongings had been moved. He said he had recently told his brother, who had been living on the property with him, to leave, and suspected he might be responsible. When deputies contacted him, the brother reportedly said he thought he was still allowed to enter the property since he hadn’t been formally evicted. Deputies informed the family about the proper eviction process.
10:28 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of an injured deer in the 29000 block of Colorado Highway 184. The deer was reportedly lying in the middle of the road, unable to get up. The responding deputy killed it with one shot from his firearm.
Saturday, Sept. 2
3:20 a.m.: A man was arrested in the 25000 block of County Road T.5 on suspicion of theft and aggravated motor vehicle theft after he was found sleeping inside a vehicle that was reported stolen in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Aug. 19.
1:09 p.m.: Deputies responded to a vehicle fire in the 16000 block of County Road 24.8, Lewis. The vehicle’s owner said the engine had started smoking while she was moving the car to make room for another vehicle on her property. Volunteers from the Lewis-Arriola Fire Department put out the flames, and no injuries or other damaged property were reported.
7:47 p.m.: A man was arrested at Woody’s Gas Station, 174 U.S. Highway 160, on suspicion of domestic violence, harassment and child abuse after deputies responded to a report from a gas station attendant that a woman was hinting she needed help. The woman claimed her fiancé had been drinking all day, and had responded angrily when she refused to buy him more alcohol, ultimately getting out of their vehicle and chasing her around the gas station parking lot while yelling. Three juveniles were reportedly in the car at the time. The woman claimed this incident was part of an ongoing pattern of abuse, which had included death threats and physical violence in the past. The suspect was medically cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital due to severe intoxication.
Sunday, Sept. 3
2:08 a.m.: A female inmate was issued a summons at Montezuma County Detention Center, 730 E. Driscoll St., on suspicion of third-degree assault after she reportedly attacked another female inmate. No injuries were reported.
Monday, Sept. 4
3:09 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a juvenile threatening suicide and causing a disturbance. The juvenile’s legal guardian reportedly claimed he had been diagnosed with multiple mental disorders and was taking medication. Because the juvenile refused to cooperate with deputies and emergency personnel, he was restrained on a gurney and transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital for a medical clearance.
