I would like to reference a letter to the editor by James Davies in your March 29 edition in which he accused the sheriff of conspiracy to get Mr. Will Furse on the ballot for D.A. It is not my intent to support any candidate, but rather I came away from Mr. Davies letter with the thought that he, as well as a large number of people that I have encountered through the years, does not understand the election procedure. Had he understood it, he would have known that what he accuses the sheriff of would have been nearly impossible.
Delegates to the Republican judicial district assembly were made up of current county elected officials (8), central committee officers (4), current co-committee persons (maximum 22) and those nominated and voted on by secret ballot at the precinct caucuses (approximately 75 percent of the voting delegates). I dont remember how many delegates there were from Dolores County, but I think we can see that the vast majority were elected by popular vote from their respective precincts.
The Republican precinct caucuses were by far and away the best attended in our county history, with over 600 people attending the 11 caucuses throughout the county. For any candidate, or someone supporting a candidate to influence this many people, as accused by Mr. Davies, from this wide a pool of people would be, I believe, nearly impossible.
Mr. Davies indicated that what he was saying was rumor. He should have left it at that.
