Kicking off its season at the John Mall Tournament on Aug. 26, the Dolores High School volleyball team came away with two victories in three matches.
The Lady Bears’ lone loss came in the tournament’s opening contest against John Mall, which began with a 25-17 Dolores victory in the first set and ended after a 25-20 second-set victory for John Mall and a 15-10 victory for John Mall in the third.
Sophomore Jordan Elder began her season on a high note with eight total kills in the match, while senior Sierra Schwartz and junior Tatum Majors each registered five kills.
The Lady Bears’ serving was especially impressive against John Mall as Cameron Schafer and Majors each recorded two aces, and Abby Jones and Schwartz recorded one ace each. Jones also registered a game-high eight 18 assists.
Playing their second match of the day against Sangre de Cristo, the Lady Bears won a hotly contested match, 26-24, 27-25. Elder again led the Lady Bears in kills with nine, while Majors and Schwartz also contributed offensively with six and five kills, respectively. Schwartz registered 15 digs in the match, and Jones recorded 19 assists.
In the final game of the tournament, Dolores faced off against Crowley County and came away with a 25-15, 25-16 victory. Elder led the team in kills with six, Schwartz and Majors each registered four kills, and Cameron Elder had three.
Now 2-1 on the season, Dolores will return to the court for one practice before traveling to Telluride for a San Juan Basin League contest against the Miners on Aug. 29. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m.
