The San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as John Daniel Huisjen, of Durango. He was biking the East Fork Trail with his girlfriend, who survived.
An off-duty Telluride EMT who was biking with a friend in the area had taken shelter below treeline 100 yards away when Huisjen’s girlfriend ran to them asking for help. The incident occurred just before noon.
The EMT said he ran to the pulseless Huisjen, started CPR and sent his friend to call 911 for a defibrillator. Other bystanders assisted with CPR.
Deputies and Telluride rescuers hiked to Huisjen, but life-saving attempts were unsuccessful. San Miguel Sheriff Bill Masters said bystanders and responders “did everything they could.”
The East Fork Trail takes off from Colorado Highway 145, about 17 miles south of Telluride.
