Trout Unlimited meeting
The next Dolores River Anglers general meeting, open to everyone, is Tuesday at the Cortez Elks Club. At 6:30 p.m., will be a meet-and-greet, and the meeting will start at 7. Tuesday is taco night at the Elks Lodge. Our guest speaker is Mark Wethington, a New Mexico Game and Fish fisheries biologist for the San Juan River at Navajo Dam, N.M. He designed and supervised the habitat improvement project in the Braids Area, adjacent to Texas Hole on the San Juan in the Quality Waters Section at Navajo Dam. Wethington will present a slide show of the before and after of the project area and explain the success that has been observed already, since the project was finished last fall. He will also explain plans for future habitat improvements on the Juan. Wethington will explain how he fishes the San Juan and some of his favorite fly patterns that he uses on his days off.
Hot Shots mens basketball tournament
The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc is hosting its annual Hot Shots mens basketball tournament. The double elimination tournament will be the weekend of March 17-18. Entry fee is $150. Registration deadline is Wednesday, March 14, and call back for game time will be Thursday, March 15, before noon. Awards will be given to first- through-third-place. Horseshoe club meeting
The Rocky Mountain Ringers horseshoe club will be holding its annual meeting on Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. at the Cortez American Legion. The meeting will be to discuss the 2012 season. If anyone is interested in putting a three-person team together or would like to be placed on a team, please attend this meeting. Mancos PeeWee Wrestling bake sale
The Mancos PeeWee wrestling team will be holding a Saint Patricks Day bake sale on Friday, March 16, in front of Mancos Valley Bank in Mancos from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please come out and help support the Mancos PeeWee wrestlers. Southwest Colorado Youth Baseball tryouts
Southwest Colorado Youth Baseball tryouts are at the Rotary Fields on Tuesday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m. Sign-ups are at 5 p.m., and also on Sunday, March 25, at 2 p.m. Also, it is now late registration. There is a $30 late fee on top of the registration fee. Late registration will end on March 25, and then there will be a waiting list.
Leopard Sharks registration
Registration day for the upcoming Cortez Leopard Sharks season will be Monday, March 26, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Cortez Journal meeting room. Short informational meetings are at 5 and at 6 p.m. Please come by and learn about the Leopard Sharks swim team. There will be registration packets at the meeting. These packets can also be picked up at the Cortez Recreation Center front desk, or requested by email at [email protected] or at the team Facebook account.
Peechue youth basketball tournament
Towaocs Ute Mountain Recreation Center will host its annual Peechue youth basketball tournament the weekend of March 31 and April 1. Teams are 14-under and 10U coed. Its a three-game guarantee and the first eight teams in each division are accepted. Entry fee is $100 and all players get a T-shirt. Cortez Rec. Center volleyball and dodgeball
The City of Cortez Parks and Recreation Department is now taking registrations for mens and womens 3-on-3 volleyball. Cost to participate is $75 per team and includes an eight-game season, along with a double elimination tournament. T-shirts awarded to tournament champions. The season begins Monday, April 9, for women and Tuesday, April 10, for men. Registrations will close Monday, April 2.
The Cortez Rec. Center is also taking registrations for coed dodgeball.League play is scheduled to begin Thursday, April 12. Registration deadline is Thursday, April 5. Cost to play is $75 per team and teams consist of six players;three women and three men.Call Joye McHenry, recreation supervisor,at 564-4080 with any questions.
Tri-City Soccer registrations
Tri-City Soccer is currently accepting registrations for spring soccer. Spring soccer will run from Monday, April 9, through Saturday, May 5, for most teams. Teams are for children aged 3 through 13 (based on their age as of July 31, 2011). Placement is based on first come, first served space availability. If a child played soccer in the fall of 2011, people do not need to re-register their child. Registrations can be picked up at the Cortez Recreation Center. Towaoc high school basketball tournament
The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc will host a boys and girls high school tournament the weekend of April 14-15. Its a double elimination tournament and entry fee is $140. Shiprock Marathon registration
The 29th annual Shiprock (N.M.) Marathon will be held on Saturday, May 5. According to Tom Riggenbach, Shiprock Marathon race director, there will be four options for event participants: full marathon, half marathon, 5-person marathon relay and a 10K trail run/walk. Registration for all Shiprock Marathon events is available online through www.active.com. Schools are encouraged to take part in the events and may register runners for the relay event with a purchase order. Registration closes one week before the event or when the registration caps are met. The caps are 200 runners for the full marathon, 400 runners for the half-marathon, and 100, 5-person teams for the relay. There is no cap on the number of participants for the 10K trail run/walk. All participants receive full marathon support on the course during the run. Support includes, runners tech shirt, finish-line food, entertainment throughout the course and at the finish line, finishers medals, unique age-group awards, and official chip timing on the USATF-certified course. A pre-race dinner is being planned in Shiprock on Friday, May 4, featuring a course preview, live entertainment, a benefit auction and a guest speaker.
