Montoya
Dutch Oven Campfire Cobbler

This recipe is a favorite of Davin Montoya of Montoya Cattle Co. He said it is easy for chefs inexperienced with Dutch oven cooking. This recipe was not one of the ones cooked in this year’s cook-off. Montoya’s current winning recipes are tightly-held secrets.Ingredients:2 cans cinnamon apple pie filling1 box white or yellow cake mix½ cup (1 stick) butter2 cups waterMethod:Line 12 inch Dutch oven with foil or spray with oil or butter. Empty pie filling into Dutch oven. Empty cake mix on top of pie filling and spread evenly. Add water and dot with butter. Do not mix. Place Dutch oven on 10 coals. Place 20 coals on lid. Bake for one hour. Every time you check the doneness, rotate the lid for uniform cooking.
Variations: Any type pie filling will work. Cherry filling with chocolate cake makes a good combination. If you use canned peaches, drain some of the juice first (about half). Add raspberry Jello to fruit and sprinkle cinnamon on top.
