A Mancos High School student is one of seven regional students named as a semifinalist for a competitive Daniels Scholarship from the Fort Lewis College Talent Search program.
Kenneth Philpott from Mancos High School was nominated for the scholarship by Talent Search, a federal college preparation program designed to help first generation and/or income-eligible students in 7th through 12th grade enter college or vocational school after high school graduation. Other students nominated are Seth Pooler from Durango High School, and Eli Velasquez, Zoe Fulco, Samantha Hunts, Reahana Ray, and Ryley Gardner from Pagosa Springs High School.
In establishing the Daniels Scholarship, cable pioneer Bill Daniels directed the program to seek out promising students who demonstrate strength of character, a well-rounded personality, potential to give back to the community, and other characteristics.
The Daniels Scholarship has grown from a small pilot program with 32 students launched in the year 2000, to awarding some 250 scholarships each year in the spring. The Daniels Scholarship is not full ride, but is supplemental to all other financial aid resources available to the student. By requiring students to apply for other readily available financial resources such as Pell Grants, the Daniels Scholarship is able to provide even more scholarships to deserving young people seeking to attend college.
