Hundreds of paintings, sketches and prints, all originating from Dolores, are expected to grace the walls of the Cortez Cultural Center during the Dolores Students Art Show.
From kindergarten through high school, all forms of art at all levels will be on display at the Cortez Cultural Center starting next week.
Elementary art teacher Mara Vinton had students make prints describing different things.
Fifth-graders prompt was to pick an object that describes their personality, Vinton said. I gave fourth-graders nonsense words, and they had to create a picture from those words. Some of the words were song titles or bands like Passion Pit or Seventeen Evergreen. Third and second did self-portraits, and first and kindergarten did their favorite food.
Student Lexy Martinez, 10, was happy to show off her purple print of a paintbrush. She said it describes her personality well.
Im very creative, she said.
Martinez said she is excited to have her art in a show and enjoyed the process of making her print.
It was pretty cool because you got to make your own and personalize it, she said. It is also something I can keep for a long time.
Student Matt Sanford, a fifth-grader, said his painting best describes his personality. It is a horseshoe. He says he is lucky.
Lets hope he is.
Im lucky. Im a bull rider, he said.
He says he has a few fractured ribs and had broken a wrist in the past to show for his sport of choice.
Going into the show, Dolores High School junior Aerin Peterson was a bit humble about her project, a beautiful graphite portrait of Robert Downey Jr.
Ive done art for a long time and like it, she said. I dont like to paint, though.
She prefers to stick to graphite.
Moki Youngquist, a junior at Dolores High School, said he was looking forward to seeing his art at the show.
I think it will be cool to get stuff out there, he said.
