Dear Editor:
We are in the midst of a primary race for the district attorneys office. I have to call into question the qualifications of Mr. William Furse and ask Mr. Furse to publicly respond to these concerns. First, Mr. Furse has been in Colorado only a few short years, and has only been in Montezuma County less than a year. He does not know the county well; he does not know the citizens of Montezuma County; he does not know the culture here. He has the life experience of his 33 years, which is to say, not a great deal.
Mr. Furse apparently had roots in Wisconsin before relocating to Colorado a few years ago. According to Wisconsin criminal court records, Mr. Furse was charged with a class H felony in year 2000 concerning the distribution of an illegal drug, nitrous oxide. The same Wisconsin records (case number 00-2348) show that Mr. Furse was convicted of a class A misdemeanor, and was sentenced to eighteen days in jail in Walworth County.
In 2008, Mr. Furse filed a complaint with the Colorado Secretary of State against another lawyer. Apparently Mr. Furse then went on vacation and failed to appear at the hearing he had requested. In this case, case number OS 20080024, the administrative law judge stated that the judge strongly disapproves of the Complainants conduct of filing a complaint, knowing that a hearing would be promptly set, but then leaving town. The judge further questioned Mr. Furses office procedures concerning the snafu.
Finally, just this year Mr. Furse failed to timely file his campaign finance report and was fined $150. Are these problems just random aberrations, or is this evidence of an attorney who cant keep his own affairs straight, much less the affairs of Montezuma County?
