A total of seven wrestlers from the area advanced to the state high school wrestling championship quarterfinals in Denver last night.
Class 4A Montezuma-Cortez advanced two to the quarterfinals. Ryan Daves pinned his opponent at 126 pounds and Trenton Gustafson earned a decision in his first-round match at 182 pounds.
Freshman Seager Oliver lost at 152 pounds to drop into the consolation bracket.
In Class 2A, Dove Creek advanced four of its nine competitors to the next round. Dolores sent one, Wyatt Wallace at 160 pounds, to the quarterfinals.
Advancing for Dove Creek were Chance Randolph at 113 pounds, Cole Baughman at 120, Dalton Randolph at 138 and Chance Johnson at 182.
Dove Creeks Nick Jones (106), Tyler Ebberts (132), Wyatt Applin (160), Jerod Galyean (220) and heavyweight Tyson Smith all lost and will now wrestle in the consolation bracket.
For Dolores, Wyatt Wade (126), Wyatt Mattausch (132) and Richard Belt at 220 all lost to drop into the consolation bracket.
The tournament continues today and Saturday at the Pepsi Center.
