Elana Cope and Emily Harris had top times in the pool last week for the Lady Panthers.
Montezuma-Cortez High School hit the water at Delta and Gunnison last Friday and Saturday.
Delta hosted a quad meet with M-CHS, Palisade and Fruita Monument. The Lady Panthers placed fourth, but had a first-place times from freshman Elana Cope in the 500-yard freestyle at 6:58.34 on Friday. Cope also finished fourth in the 200-free at 2:38.37.
Senior Meggie Curtis placed third in the 200-free in 2:35.37. She later won the 100-yard butterfly, but was later ruled disqualified because her feet came apart during the stroke.
She never gets DQd. Shes a senior, its the first time shed ever won, Lady Panthers coach Ann Hight said about Curtis. It was pretty upsetting. I mean, she was happy with her swim. But theyre (judges) sticklers. Her feet have to be together. It is what it is.
Dolores junior Emily Harris came in second in the 100-free in 1:03.16. She carried that momentum to Gunnison the next day with a top time in the 100-butterfly in 1:21.39.
Amanda Haukeness was eighth in the 100-free (1:15.28) in Delta. She took fourth in Gunnison in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:35.24.
Cope recorded a third-place time of 1:26.39 in the 100-butterfly in Gunnison, while Curtis was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:24.92.
M-CHS will swim their last regular season meets this week at Delta and Aspen.
Coach Hight is going to change up the Lady Panthers swimming routine, as the season winds down.
Ive been working the girls very hard, so they swam these times, Hight said about the performances in Delta and Gunnison. These next two weeks, Ill be backing off, so they can start resting. Next week before the district championships, I will start tapering them.
The Lady Panthers swim on Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. and 9 a.m.
At this point, I cant get them into better shape. That part of the training is over, said Hight, whos also an exercise physiologist. Its the fine detail thats going to make a difference. They will also drop times, because I will allow their muscles to start resting and recovering to get stronger. We wait for the end of the year to do that.
