Dear Editor:
A recent editorial in the Cortez Journal correctly noted that the majority of voters in Montezuma County who are not registered Republican will be effectively disfranchised in the election of those who will govern our county after the 2012 election.
In Montezuma County, to date, there are contested Republican primaries for two county commissioner seats and the district attorney. Because of the strong majority of registered Republicans, potential candidates from other political parties and independents often fail to compete in local elections and, when they do compete, rarely win, at least in part, because of that strong republican majority.
The idea of registering with a political party that does not represent ones views on some issues can be distasteful to some. However, this may be the time when non-Republicans should consider registering republican so they can have a part in choosing our local elected officials.
Regardless of political affiliation, all of us have the right to vote our principles in November. In the meantime, all of us could also have a say in who will be the likely unopposed Republican candidates in Novembers local election.
