I am aware that it is not your No. 1 concern to please the people that you are reporting to, but I have a complaint.
I am from Cortez and have lived here my whole life. Recently I have noticed that what is reported barely skims the top of our little town. For example, a new business will be reported on time and again before an old one will ever be mentioned.
I work at a real estate office in town as well as a small family-owned business that has been here for 24 years. I notice on the real estate side that your ad prices have increased due to the “big city paper” buying our small town news outlet.
On the other side I have noticed that a small town, family-owned business that has been giving to the community and donating for 24 years cannot catch a break. You have done write-ups for new businesses over and over. But for businesses that have been providing jobs and services to this town for decades there will never be a word. If it is your prerogative to get business to thrive in this town and stimulate the economy, then you have not sufficiently done that. This town deserves as much news coverage as it can possibly get.
I would suggest a business spotlight once a week, because there are many places in town that have been around for a long time, giving back to this town, that deserve business mention.
One specific business was directly skimmed over in one of your articles about a new business in which you stated, “there is nowhere in the area to get powder coating done.” That is not true considering the business I work for has been doing it for years. Not only was it an irresponsibly done report that was not researched properly, but it hurt another business in the process.
I believe in this company. They have been doing something really great for this town for a long time, but now they are considering moving to a new place that will get them more revenue.
