Several months ago, students were saddened when they came to school and discovered vandals had struck.
They were greeted by boarded-up windows and doors.
Sometime over the weekend some still unknown suspects threw rocks through the very large windows in the front of the school and through the new electronic message board purchased by the Parent Teacher Association.
We love our school, and we dont want our school broken into, said Aryelle Wright, president of the Dolores Elementary Student Council.
Immediately following the incident, four girls wrote a letter to Principal Sherri Maxwell. While many at the school were sad about the incident, they wanted to do something about it.
They took it very personally, Maxwell said.
So the girls Kamea Neel, Julieanna Goad, Morgaine Milligin and Destinee Goddard got to work.
They worked with the student council and began having bake sales over breaks. They sold cookies. They sold coffee, and they sold cake.
The group raised at least $214.35, enough to purchase a surveillance camera to be mounted at the front of the elementary school.
Maxwell said she is proud of her students
They took something bad and turned it into something good, she said.
Students said they enjoyed working together for a common goal.
It was so much fun spending time together, Wright said.
Maxwell said the windows at the front of the school have been broken twice this year, something that is very expensive. The windows are large, made of safety glass and have to be special ordered.
Goad said she took it personally because her father works for the school and had to come in on the weekend to clean the mess up.
It is sad someone would do this to our schools, Goad said.
