The Dolores Public Library is looking for a new director after a recent hire unexpectedly quit.
Former director Virginia Mattingly left the library in May after just five months on the job.
“It was a shock because we liked her, but she said the job was not a good fit for her,” said library board member Pat Kantor.
Mattingly replaced Debra Greenacre, who was the director for three years, but left to be closer to family in Michigan. Before that, Carole Arnold was the Dolores library director for 30 years.
“We’re looking for an innovative person who has experience and administration skills,” Kantor said. “We have a very strong staff who are managing very well.”
Library staffers Diana Donohue and Sheri Mills are co-interim directors until a permanent director can be found.
According to the job posting, candidates should have experience in librarian sciences and technology, be able to collaborate with local schools, businesses and local government and have grant-writing skills.
Candidates should have a master’s degree in library sciences with coursework in management and accounting, or a bachelor’s in library sciences with significant experience. Professionals with degrees in education or experience in public service or nonprofits will also be considered. Salary ranges from $48,000 to $55,000 depending on experience.

Including the director, the library has a staff of five, three of which are part-time. The library’s budget is derived from a property tax mill levy that brings in about $240,000 per year.
The library district is overseen by a five-person board. They are president Belinda Plats, vice president Jeanne Becker, secretary Virginia (Gina) Hernandez, Pat Kantor and Rysta Williford. The board meetings are usually held in the library meeting room on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The next meeting is June 13.
