The Cortez Chamber of Commerce invites you to join us at Citizens State Bank for a holiday-themed Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, for some good ol fashioned holiday spirit.

Santa Claus is coming to downtown Cortez
The American Legion and the Cortez Fire Department are sponsoring Santas outside visit from 12 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. The block will be closed at Market and Main St. for this event; look for the fire truck(s) on Market St., south of Main.
Santa will visit with children and will give out candy and gifts to good kids. All are welcome!

Deadline approaches to apply to Master Gardener training program
The deadline for turning in Colorado Master Gardener program applications is Friday, Dec. 16, for the program that will begin Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, and that will continue every Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., to April 5.
The Master Gardener program provides 11 weeks of training on lawn, plant, tree, and vegetable care; soils and fertilizers; water-management; insects and diseases of plants; pruning; as well as the opportunity to meet other gardeners and give volunteer time to the community.

Animal shelter will begin new 10 Strays of Christmas dog walk
The Cortez Animal Shelter will hold the 10 Strays of Christmas from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day until Thursday, Dec. 22. Adoptable dogs are sponsored by a local business, wear a special vest adorned with that days sponsor name or logo, and are walked around downtown during the lunch hour in hopes of being adopted.
The program will raise awareness about homeless pets in the community, and the animal shelters drive to find these lonely critters good homes for the holidays. This is visibility for any type of business that can sponsor an animal, and a way to help a shelter dog. Suggested sponsorship is $25 per ad, per day. Sponsorship includes advertisement on the dog as it is walked, and the ad getting placed on the animals cage at the shelter.

Women, War and Peace film will screen at Conscious Movie Night
Center of Light will present Conscious Movie Night, with the film Women, War and Peace: Peace Unveiled at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31, Dolores.
This documentary shows how three women in Afghanistan risk their lives to make sure womens rights dont get traded away in peace negotiations with the Taliban. This event is free, and all are welcome. All donations will go to support Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, an organization promoting womens rights and secular democracy, and striving for multilateral disarmament through nonviolent strategies.

Southwest Singers will present free Christmas concerts
The Southwest Singers will present a pair of free concerts this Christmas season on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16, and 17, at 7 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the First United Methodist Church located at Park and Empire in Cortez.
The theme of the concerts will be Christmas, of course, and celebrates the birth of the Christ child songs will include some old, some new, and some sing-along. Refreshments will be served after the music.

Cortez Library announces December Storytime theme
Tis the Holiday Season! is the December theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park Street. Storytime is held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m.
Storytime will wrap up the month with The Giving Season on Friday, Dec. 16. There will be no Storytime on Dec. 23 and Dec. 30 in observance of the Christmas and New Years holidays.
Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Polar Express will be screened at rec center event
The Cortez Recreation Center invites kids to join us for Santa and a Movie on Saturday, Dec. 17. Meet Santa at 2 p.m. and then well view Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer at 2:30 p.m. At 3 p.m., well screen the movie The Polar Express. The Rec Center is at 425 Roger Smith Avenue.
This event is free, and there will be popcorn, hot chocolate, and a candy cane for participants. Please bring a donation of one can of food for our local food bank (optional).

Guitar-oriented Moetones will rock out at final show of the year
The Moetones will celebrate Christmas with their final show of 2011 at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Dolores River Brewery, 100 S. Fourth St., Dolores.

The performance will feature the choir and band groups from M-CHS, and there will be a silent auction of gift baskets that are made by the band students and parents. We will also hold the raffle drawing for an iPad 2.

M-CHS Honor Society seeks donations of winter wear for needy
The Montezuma-Cortez High School National Honor Society is hosting the annual NHS Coat Drive from now until Wednesday, Dec. 21. Those who would like to donate can drop off winter wear that is in good condition (coats, boots, scarves, gloves, hats, etc.) to the M-CHS library (Room 200) during school hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. The schools address is 206 West 7th St., Cortez.
All of the donated items will be donated to local people in need at the Renew Shelter for Battered Women.

Raffle will benefit Cortez Recreation Center scholarship fund
Each year Friends of Recreation for a Healthy Community has a raffle to raise funds for future scholarships. Raffle tickets are on sale at the Cortez Recreation Center from now until Thursday, Dec. 22. The drawing will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, at the Cortez Recreation Center.
The raffle tickets are available at three tickets for $10 or one ticket for $4. The first-place prize in the raffle is an annual family pass to the Cortez Recreation Center a four-member family pass is valued at $385. FOR has given more than $20,000 in scholarships for use of the Cortez Recreation Center since the center opened in 2004. Scholarships are available for persons who are disabled, elderly, and are financially qualified. The financial qualifiers are the same as used by federal programs such as HUD. One does not need to be present at the drawing to win.
