Film We Still Live Here will show at Community Cinema series
The Mancos Public Library and the Tribal College Journal will show the next film in the Community Cinema series titled We Still Live Here: As Nutayunean at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.
The Wampanoag saved the pilgrims from starvation, and lived to regret it. Spurred on by their celebrated linguist Jessie Little Doe Baird, the Wampanoag of Cape Cod and Marthas Vineyard are reviving their language more than a century after the last native speaker died. A panel-led discussion will follow the film. This film exhibition is free.

Cortez library has Gobble, Gobble! theme for November Storytime
Gobble, Gobble! is the November theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join us for the craft at 11:15 a.m.
Please note: the library switched Storytime hour from Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. to Fridays at 10:30 a.m.
Well explore A National Holiday Friday, Nov. 18. There will be no Storytime on Friday, Nov. 25, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Cultural Center will host screening of Inside Job film
A local group has arranged to screen the film Inside Job at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.
The film documents the history of the global financial meltdown of 2007-08 which some say cost us $20 trillion. Inside Job is from an Academy Award nominated director, Charles Ferguson, and was featured in the Telluride Film Festival last year. If you like the film, leave a donation with the Cultural Center.

Center of Light will present Bag It at Conscious Movie Night
The Center of Light will screen the film Bag It at Conscious Movie Night, 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 County Road 31, Dolores.
Bag It is a documentary about plastic bags that evolved into a wholesale investigation into plastics and their effect on waterways, oceans, and even peoples bodies. This event is free, and all are welcome. All donations support Roots and Shoots, a Jane Goodall Institute program, about making positive change happen for communities, for animals and for the environment.

United Methodist Women will hold annual Holiday Bazaar
The United Methodist Women will hold their annual Holiday Bazaar at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the fellowship hall of the First United Methodist Church, 515 N. Park St., Cortez.
Entrance to the bazaar is free. Everyone is welcome. Coffee and pie will be served all morning, and lunch will include a choice of chili or homemade soup. The bazaar will include many handmade ornaments and crafts, catnip mice, stained glass, quilts, toys, etc., as well as homemade breads, pies, and other baked goods. There will be a special booth with homemade peanut brittle and chili in a jar, using the recipes of longtime Cortez resident Virginia Ginger Graham. The United Methodist Women have several local mission projects which will benefit from the bazaar.

Summit Lake Church will hold Thanksgiving dinner
The Summit Lake Community Church is planning the annual Community Thanksgiving dinner and would like to invite all members of the community to attend at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, at the church, 36501 Colorado Highway 184.
The church will furnish the turkey and all the trimmings, drinks, and table service, and ask that guests bring a side dish or dessert to share. Everyone is asked to bring friends and neighbors who may not have known about the dinner. It will be a good time of fellowship and renewing of acquaintances with friends and community members that you may not have seen for awhile.

John Jorgenson Quintet will bring Gypsy Jazz to concert series
The John Jorgenson Quintet will perform at the second concert of the SouthWest Colorado Concerts winter concert series at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium, 206 W. Seventh St., Cortez. Come early to purchase tickets; doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The groups style is gypsy jazz, the dynamic swing music created by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s. Dave McCarty of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine has called Grammy-award winner John Jorgenson not just Americas finest proponent of this exceptionally demanding flatpicking guitar style, but one of the worlds truly great artists in the Gypsy-jazz genre. During his career, Jorgenson has played with artists as diverse as Sting, Luciano Pavarotti, Earl Scruggs, Barbra Streisand and Benny Goodman. He is an A-List session player working in L.A., Nashville and London and has appeared on numerous platinum-selling and Grammy-winning CDs. Each member of the John Jorgenson Quintet, consisting of lead and rhythm guitar, violin, bass and drums, is a virtuoso, yet the music is very accessible, melodic and appealing.

Graces Soup Kitchen will serve Community Thanksgiving Dinner
Graces Soup Kitchen, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, will serve its 13th annual traditional Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, at the Mary Blake Hall at the church, 110 W. North St., Cortez.
This community dinner is for anyone who is hungry or needs some company. Graces also delivers for the homebound and have take-outs (please call ahead and provide a name and phone number). This event is open to the entire community, and is a special occasion, thanks to the 50 to 70 volunteers who decorate the hall for this day.
Graces is an all-volunteer organization, which relies on the generous support of the community. A $20 gift would help feed a family of three or four. Graces also needs frozen turkeys, which will be accepted now and up to Thanksgiving, and fresh (please, no frozen) fruit pies any type to be brought in on Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving. Graces provided more than 12,000 meals last year without condition or requirement; the kitchen is open for meals three days a week, starting at noon.

For Pets Sake to hold annual Turkey Trot fun run, walk
For Pets Sake Humane Society will hold its Eighth Annual Cortez Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24, at the Parque de Vida Pavilion near the Cortez Recreation Center, 425 Roger Smith Ave. The 1-mile fun run/walk starts at 10 a.m. regardless of the weather.
This is probably For Pets Sake most enjoyable event of the year. The entry fee is $20 and includes a cool long-sleeve commemorative T-shirt. Costumes for all are encouraged. Prizes will be awarded for fastest people with pets, best and best-coordinated costumes, best trick, most unusual pet to cross the finish line, and lots of other categories. All proceeds benefit For Pets Sake Humane Society and their work for the pets of Montezuma and Dolores counties.

American Whitewater rep will discuss McPhee dam releases
Everyone who rafts, kayaks and canoes on the lower Dolores River is invited to a presentation by Nathan Fey from American Whitewater at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at the Dolores River Brewery, 100 S. Fourth St.
Fey will lead a discussion about the ongoing negotiations with water managers about releases from McPhee dam. All whitewater boating enthusiasts are encouraged to attend to learn more about possible changes for the Dolores River. The event is sponsored by the Lower Dolores Boating Advocates.

Dolores Christmas Bazaar will benefit Community Center
The Annual Dolores Community Center Christmas Bazaar will be held this year from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave.
This year 46 vendors have already signed up to display such crafts as Christmas wreaths, scarves, homemade breads and candies, pies and Christmas pumpkin rolls. There will also be homemade ornaments, quilts and afghans, leather items, toys for children, artwork of all kinds and jewelry. Elks Lodge seeks vendors, craftsmen for annual Christmas Bazaar
It is time for the Cortez Elks Lodges annual Christmas Bazaar. The Elks are seeking craftsmen to sell their goods at this event that will take place on Sunday, Dec. 11. Vending tables are now available to those interested in renting a 6-foot-long table at $25 each. Doors will open at 10 a.m., and the bazaar will remain open until 5 p.m. The Cortez Elks Lodge is at 2100 N. Dolores Road.
All proceeds from the rental of the tables help with food baskets and gifts for the needy, and scholarships for the upcoming year. There will be entertainment to announce Santas arrival at 3 p.m. to talk with the children, and pictures will be available of kids with Santa. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Southwest Singers will present free Christmas concerts
The Southwest Singers will present a pair of free concerts this Christmas season on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16 and 17, at 7 p.m. Both concerts will be held at the First United Methodist Church located at Park and Empire in Cortez.
The theme of the concerts will be Christmas, of course, and celebrates the birth of the Christ child songs will include some old, some new, and some sing-along. Refreshments will be served after the music.
