What’s in a Name?

Many residents of the area know where the name McPhee originated. For the rest, here’s the story: McPhee Reservoir was named after a lumber town that was formed by the New Mexico lumber company in 1924. The town was named after one of the company’s owners. It was located a few miles north of Dolores where part of the reservoir is today. The lumber company flourished for more than a decade and many found employment there. After the stock market crashed, the saw mill closed in 1930; however, thanks to government contracts, it reopened later in the decade. Huge fires destroyed the sawmill in 1941 and another in 1948.
