Dear Editor:
On October 13, 2011 the Cortez Journal Editorial recommended that the Air Force conduct a full environmental impact statement concerning proposed low-altitude tactical navigation (LATN) training over the skies of SW Colorado and NW New Mexico. C-130J Hercules and CV-22 Osprey aircraft will make nearly 700 sorties per year at an above ground level as low as 300 feet. This exercise will last indefinitely as long as there is a need for training, possibly 10-20 years according to an Air Force representative. A C-130 at 300 feet will generate almost 100 decibels of sound. It will not be an event that anyone or anything can ignore if one of these aircraft passes overhead. Public comment is being sought by the Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico. They can be reached by email [email protected]. Public comment will be received until November 5, 2011.
Michael Lavey,
