Dear Editor:
Today, I wish I could cast my vote for a new home for the Southwest Open School. I would gladly pay the small tax increase to provide that amazing entity with a long overdue new building.
Years ago, when SWOS first opened, I worked at Cortez Newspapers and it was my job to let the community know what was going on out there. Rumors about the new, non-traditional school were not all favorable and certainly the school wasnt much to look at. I think most people viewed it as temporary way back then.
What I found was certainly not what I expected. These kids had no time for apathy, confrontation or disrespect for authority. They were too busy learning, each in their own way. Every one I encountered was happy to talk to me and to show off their surroundings and their accomplishments. It was amazing!
Long story short: Students and staff impressed me enough that I became a cheerleader for the school from then on. I love to see teachers who love their work and students who are eager and anxious to learn. That was always the atmosphere I felt at SWOS.
I have always said that life would be extremely boring if everyone were cut from the same mold. Fortunately, were not. Some learn with or without a teacher, others do just fine in a traditional classroom and some flourish in an alternative method of education.
How lucky Cortez is, to have a place for young adults to find their hope and build their dreams. And to have the exceptional teachers who strive to find potential in every student that steps through their door, because they know without question, that it is there. The result is a high percentage of graduates that truly appreciate and fully utilize their education.
The SWOS has proven its worth. Consider giving it your vote on Tuesday. You have my proxy.
