The Colorado Department of Transportation started a project this week to improve a 9-mile section of U.S. Highway 491 north of Cortez.
The work, contracted to Oldcastle SW Group, of Grand Junction, for $6.9 million, consists of resurfacing, signing and striping of the highway north of Lebanon Road to about one-half mile south of the Colorado Highway 145 junction.
“This stretch of highway sees more than 5,700 vehicles a day, with 13 percent heavy truck traffic,” CDOT engineer Tim Webb said in a news release. “We’ll be removing and recycling the top layer of asphalt to correct surface cracking and imperfections before applying a new asphalt overlay.”
The project also will include upgrades to 3,000 feet of guardrail on Colorado 184 near Narraguinnep Reservoir, the CDOT release said.
Drivers can expect single-lane closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, from May 8 to Nov. 30, the CDOT news release said.
