Efforts to bring more recycling availability to the Four Corners area gained an ally when Baker Sanitation Inc. recently began providing recycling services.
Utilizing a $145,000 state Recycling Resources Economic Opportunity Grant and working with non-profit Four Corners Recycling Initiative, the local sanitation company will be providing compartmentalized roll-off bins at select locations for public use and cardboard bins for area businesses.
BSI General Manager Loren Workman said the company hopes to provide a service to the public, save landfill space and natural resources as well as better serve their customers.
We wanted to take recycling to the next level, he said, adding the service was requested by BSI customers. We would like the customers to know we appreciate what they say.
Compartmentalized roll-off bins are planned to be placed at Montezuma-Cortez High School, the L&L Construction/BSI building at 2201 South Broadway in Cortez, Cedar Mesa Ranches in Mancos and a possible to-be-determined location in Dove Creek.
These bins will feature compartments for aluminum cans, steel cans, cardboard and mixed paper. Paper accepted includes copy paper, computer paper, advertisements, junk mail, newspaper, magazines and file folders. Paperboard, chip board, florescent paper, dark copy paper, blue lined paper, six-pack carriers and egg cartons will not be accepted.
Glass, plastic, metal foil and plates will also not be accepted at these locations.
Workman said the roll-off bins are for use by the general public as a service that does not generate a profit for BSI.
Also with the grant, the company was able to purchase 30 bins for commercial cardboard recycling. The bins are available only to businesses that are BSI garbage customers.
We think there is going to be a lot of demand, Workman said, adding the recycling program is in the test phase.
Lastly, BSI will use the grant funds to partner with Four Corners Recycling Initiative for public education programs on recycling, Workman said.
In the future, Workman said the company would like to provide services to all homes and businesses in the area.
