M-CHS Booster Club Homecoming Activities
The parents of the M-CHS Panthers football team will be doing a Navajo taco/frybread fundraiser today at the powder puff game from 5 to 8 p.m. at Panther Stadium. Navajo tacos will be $7 a plate with a drink. There will be a deal for $20 for four dinners (two adults and two children). Frybread by itself will be $2.50 each.
The 2011 M-CHS homecoming booster bonfire blast from the past is today from 7:45 to 10:15 p.m. at the Cortez Softball Complex. Cheerleaders, dance team and the band will be performing. Team captains will speak, and homecoming royalty will be announced. There will be hot dogs and smores. Come support our students!
Stillwater Foundation Baseball Tryouts
The Stillwater Foundation is forming two baseball teams for high school freshmen and sophomores to play in the spring and summer of 2012. Tryouts will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon at the La Plata County Fairgrounds fields in Durango. Teams will participate in the highest-level regional and national tournaments. Special Olympics Bowling
The Cortez Special Olympics state bowling tournament is in Denver on Friday, Nov. 11. Donations and fundraising contribute to travel expenses for the state bowling tournament, as well as travel expenses in other sports. The Cortez Special Olympics bowling team is currently selling pizzas door-to-door for fundraising, and will hold a farmers market fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Cortez Farmers Market. CMS Golf Tournament
The first Cortez Middle School Fall Golf Classic will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at the South Forty Golf Course with a shotgun start at noon. Ute Mountain Rec. Basketball Fall League
The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc will begin its fall basketball league season on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The championship tournament will be in mid December. Entry fee is $255 (includes league play and tournament) and a $100 deposit is due by Tuesday, Oct. 11. Jackets will be given to the champions, MVP awards presented, and All-Stars will be selected. Montezuma Martial Arts Karate Tournament
Montezuma Martial Arts Studio, located at 18 N. Beech St., will have its first invitational karate tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and the tournament will start at 10:00 a.m. The event will feature the instructors and student members from Montezuma Martial Arts competing against members from Cortez based Yama Bushi Dojo club members. Contestants ages will range from 6 to adults. All belt ranks, white through black, will be accepted. Competition will be in sparring, kata forms and weapons forms. Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place. There will also be a grand trophy awarded to the best overall competitor. All competitors are required to register in advance or no later than 9 a.m. on the morning of the tournament. People must provide their own protective gear. Admission fees are $5 per event or $10 for all three. Spectator fee is $8 for general admission; children 6-under are free. All active duty military personnel are also free with ID. Free intermission demonstrations include Isaque Sandman Martinez, a local renowned mixed martial artist. Walt Stramel will give a demonstration on fencing/foil techniques, followed by Henry Anchando, who will perform a Japanese sword demonstration.
