Mancos library will offer workshop series on Apple computers
A new technology class entitled The Mac Series All About Apple Computers will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.
The first workshop is Introduction to the Mac. Come learn the ins and outs of Apple Macintosh computers. The class will be taught by Dave Sessions of The Mac Ranch Four Corners.

Circle of Parents training can create support network for families
Circle of Parents will offer facilitator training from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Calvin Denton Room at Empire Electric, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
By strengthening healthy family living skills and creating a support network of parents, Circle of Parents can help increase resiliency in families. This program gives parents the essential tools necessary for families to become part of a supportive community. Circle of Parents is designed to foster an open exchange of ideas, support, information and resources. Day one is appropriate for anyone interested in supporting this project in their community. This session will cover elements of a Circle of Parents group, protective factors and parent leadership philosophy, and organizing your community around the use of this model. Day two is targeted at future parent group facilitators and parent leaders. This session will cover facilitation skills, your role in supporting healthy parenting, group development and utilizing parent leadership.

The Cortez Public Library will hold a computer class on Basic Word at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15. The library is located at 202 N. Park, Cortez.
Subjects to be covered will include selecting text, changing text, fonts, saving a document, cut, copy and paste, margins, page orientation, line spacing, spell check, and help.

Librarys September Storytime theme is I Love to Read!
I Love to Read! is the September theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park Street. Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children and every Saturday at the Farmers Market beginning at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Farmers Market is located on the corner of S. Elm and Main streets. Older children are welcome to join for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime will follow the same theme as the preceding Thursday.
Next is Curious Georges Literary Parents on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17. Well explore another author on Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 with Beatrix Potters Animal Friends. Storytime will wrap up the month with I Can Write & Draw at the Same Time!: Jack Ezra Keats on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1.
Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Mancos Public Library begins Community Cinema season
The Mancos Public Library and Rocky Mountain PBS will kick off the Community Cinema season with a screening of the film Pray the Devil Back to Hell at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.
Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the countrys civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about an agreement during the stalled peace talks. A panel-led discussion will follow the film. This is a free event.

Author, architect will speak about old world megalithic architecture
Architect and author Vince Lee will present Romancing the Stones, Back When Size Mattered as part of the Four Corners Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. Crow Canyon Archaeological Center will host the talk, which is free and open to the public. Crow Canyon is located at 23390 Road K in Cortez.
In his presentation, Lee will review the history of Old World megalithic architecture from its apparent beginnings in Turkey almost 12,000 years ago through its spectacular culmination at Roman Baalbek in the third century A.D. Lee will focus on Baalbek, a little-known but astounding complex in Lebanons Bekka Valley. The site is notable not only for its colossal architecture containing the largest cut stones ever hewn by man, but for the mysteries surrounding how, why, when, and by whom portions of the structures were built. Baalbek is a true megalithic mystery.

Artist Rieb will teach art classes
for youths ages 10 to 18
Local artist Roni Lee Rieb will teach art classes to kids ages 10 to 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon starting on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market.
Rieb attended high school in Dolores. She has been selling art locally and out of state since 1977. At the age of 13, Roni developed the mathematical formula for drawing horses that she still uses and teaches today. Roni is well-known for her equine and pet portraiture, and is a multifaceted artist who works in many different media. The cost is $10 per class or $35 for all four prepaid. Space is limited

Cortez Animal Shelter will shampoo your dogs at adopt-a-thon
The Cortez Animal Shelter will host a dog wash and adopt-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2791 E. Main St.
Participants can bring their own dog shampoo or the shelter will provide it. Bring only friendly dogs that are up to date on their rabies vaccine; proof of rabies vaccination will be asked for. The shelter also has a selection of kittens, adult cats, puppies and adult dogs available for adoption that are eager to find their forever home.

Hospice will host bereavement education and training seminar
Hospice of Montezuma will be presenting a bereavement education and training seminar for those within any organization that help others with grief and loss issues. The seminar will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Lunch will be provided. Hospice of Montezuma is located at 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez.
This seminar will provide attendees with the following: Education about loss and grief issues; specific ways to assist the bereaved, what to do, and what not to do; and the tools and skills to help others process their feelings and emotions.

Rock Springs Community Church will host Reach Out Music Fest
Rock Springs Community Church and GPC Missions is proud to present the Reach Out Music Fest from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in Cortez. The event will be held at 32233 U.S. Highway 160 in Cortez.
This event will help raise money for children in need all over the world and in our community. This years event will feature Donny Johnson, Andrew Witt, Ryan Stevenson and Anthem Lights. The event is completely free, but organizers ask that you help raise money for children in need by giving to the love offering during the event. Local members of MCHS Class
of 1948 will hold reunion
Local members of the Class of 1948 will host their 63rd reunion beginning Friday, Sept. 16, with registration and an open house for friends from noon to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room, Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
Saturday, Sept. 17, activities will offer various local attractions for groups or individuals; on Saturday evening, there will be a dinner at the Cortez Elks Lodge for class members, and on Sunday morning, Sept. 18, a casual breakfast/brunch will be held at a local restaurant.
As of this date, approximately 24 of the surviving 32 class members are registered to attend the reunion.
Four Corners Square Dancers invite public for introductory night
Four Corners Square Dancers club will begin new lessons at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at Kemper Elementary School, and invite you to join us at our introductory dessert meet and greet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, to learn more about the club and square dancing. This event is also at Kemper Elementary, 620 E. Montezuma Ave., Cortez.
Square dancing can be a fun activity, good for body and brain.

Spring Creek Basin mustangs will be available for adoption
The National Mustang Association will sponsor trainer Ems Rapp to demonstrate her wild horse taming and training techniques from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160 east of Cortez. Rapp will ride her Spring Creek Basin mustang, Rock-On, adopted after the 2007 roundup. Rock-On will serve as a Spring Creek Basin mustang ambassador for everyone to meet.
Roughly 25 wild horses from the Spring Creek Basin herd in Disappointment Valley will be available for adoption at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the fairgrounds. The adoption will follow a planned gather by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management around Sept. 15.
Expect to see blacks, grays, colorful pintos and duns. The horses will be 4 years old and younger. Over the years, many Spring Creek Basin horses have been adopted, tamed, trained and become treasured riding horses.
Individuals interested in adopting a horse must meet corral and shelter requirements. The standards are available at http://www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/requirements.php. Horses not adopted will be placed in long-term pastures.

For Pets Sake accepts donations
of items for fall yard sale
For Pets Sake Humane Society will have its annual fall yard sale Friday through Sunday, Sept. 30 through Oct. 2, at the Cortez Christian Church Family Life Center on the corner of Empire and Colorado Highway 145. This is expected to be the humane societys biggest sale yet. The hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon 2 p.m. Sunday.
The humane society still needs lots more treasures for the sale so it can help the dogs and cats in Montezuma and Dolores counties. (No computers, monitors, printers, or other computer accessories, tires, or televisions.)
Bring donations to the center from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, or call 565-PETS (7387) and leave a message if you need to drop off items at a different time, or if you have a large item for pickup.
